Bynx the Bobcat

Who is Bynx?

Bynx is the official ambassador of the Irvine-Laguna Wildlife Corridor (ILWC). His purpose is to help educate the local residents of Orange County about the significant importance of habitat connectivity. Join him on his journey through the ILWC from the Cleveland National Forest in the North to the Laguna Coast Wilderness in the South. BNX: THE BOBCAT BEHIND BYNX?

July 2015 – OC Trackers wildlife expert Dick Newell is informed of a sick bobcat roaming near the University of California, Irvine.

September 2015 – The City of Irvine Animal Control captures the sick bobcat and is placed in the care of USGS’s Dr. Scott Weldy. The bobcat is officially given the name BNX. ‘Bynx’ was suffering from mange as a result of rodenticide consumption.

October 2015 – Bynx was fitted with a pink/lavender ID tag prior to being released after recovery.

January 2016 – Local wildlife photographers Jodi Newell and Marcia Gonzalez capture photos of Binx in an Irvine wetland.

Summer 2017 – Reports of Bynx are submitted to OC Trackers that suggest he may be sick.

While reported sightings of Bynx have not been made in recent years, the presence of similar bobcats in the greater Irvine area will surely benefit from the Irvine-Laguna Wildlife Corridor.
